Dr. Gulmen is a licensed naturopathic physician with a private practice in Stratford, Connecticut. Integrating modern and ancient medicine with natural therapies, she helps to achieve health in the body, mind, heart, and spirit.
Dr. Gulmen has participated in various areas of healthcare throughout her 30 year career. She contributed to public health research by interviewing homeless individuals for an HIV/TB transmission risk project for the University of California - San Francisco. She went on to conduct original basic science research in immunology and coordinate clinical research trials in rheumatology for the University of Chicago. Credentialed by the Connecticut Department of Children and Family Services, she has worked with special needs children in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition to her private clinic, she has offered natural medicine in a variety of settings such as being part of the New York City marathon medical triage team and providing Reiki to patients at the oncology center at Yale New Haven Hospital. The depth and breadth of her experience allows her to offer comprehensive and compassionate care to her patients. Dr. Gulmen is a graduate of the University of California - Berkeley, the University of Chicago, the University of Bridgeport, and Yale University. She has completed additional studies in the Vedic arts including yoga (certified as a teacher), Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine), and Jyotish (Vedic astrology).
Dr. Gulmen has lectured to both public and professional audiences around the world. She provided a seminar on natural medicine approaches to arthritis to the medical staff at Beijing United Family Hospital. She also developed curricula for medical students as a classroom instructor and clinicial supervisor (in physiology, histology, hydrotherapy, and mind-body medicine). She develops seminars for local groups such as teaching an introduction to the ancient medicine of Ayureda for modern times (in collaboration with the Stratford Department of Public Health and the Stratford Library) and teaching 2-4th graders nutrition (in collaboration with the New Haven Ballet). Dr. Gulmen also teaches through her various publications including scientific journals (The Journal of Biological Chemistry, The American Journal of Chinese Medicine), textbooks ("Energy Medicine" chapter in the Textbook of Complementary and Alternative Medicine), magazines, and her own authored books (NatureNotes: Natural Medicine for Viral Infections Drink To Your Health Medicinal Teas, Juices, and Milks from Around the World).
Dr. Gulmen was responsible for organizing the first naturopathic medical brigade to Nicaragua in collaboration with Natural Doctors International. This seed project resulted in 55 subsequent brigades for the organization. She also participated in a service trip to a village near Jodhpur, India organized by the Yale Alumni Service Corp. In addition to being an on-site clinician in the medical clinic, she coordinated the public health and business development teams to create a successful project that increased adoption of iron supplements by local women to decrease maternal mortality, preterm delivery, and low birth weight. Many of her patients in the US originate from other countries and her practice integrates paradigms from around the world - Ayurveda, European, Native American, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. She has traveled extensively around the world and speaks several languages - Spanish , French, German, Japanese, Hindi, Turkish.
With a deep love and appreciation of the arts, Dr. Gulmen believes in the art of healing as well as the healing of art. Beyond the creative work of developing medical seminars and publications, she has an extensive background in photography and enjoys cooking, painting, gardening, movies, and singing. As an artist, she brings an intuitive, creative approach to her clinical work.
