Most people naturally think that my health problems are what lead me to go into the field of naturopathic medicine. This actually isn’t the case. Here is my story:
I was born in Dallas (Go Texas!), and was there until the end of elementary school. That’s when my parents moved my sister and I to Florida, where I then went to middle, high school, and undergrad (Go Gators!). I decided in middle school that I wanted to be a doctor – a conventional M.D. because that is the only kind that I knew. I recall my dad telling me in high school: “for someone who wants to be a doctor, you sure do hate taking medicine.” It was true, I would literally try every home remedy that I could find (I had a book of remedies) whenever some illness came along before I would turn to conventional approaches.
Fast-forward to senior year of undergrad. My world was rocked as my dad was diagnosed with an aggressive type of brain tumor. Over the course of a year I watched him go through debilitating surgery, chemo, and radiation. He ultimately passed away. As I processed his death, I began to ponder why people get brain tumors, and well as cancer in general. I was in the middle of applying to conventional medical schools during this time. The more I learned, the more I started to change the products that I used, and the food that I ate. Along the way, I learned of the field of naturopathic medicine. I realized that I could still go to medical school and become a doctor, but focus at a naturopathic medical school on using drugs only when necessary while getting to the root cause and utilizing a host of natural, less invasive therapies when possible. This revelation altered my career course as well as my life. I have never looked back, and consider it an honor when I partner with clients who are seeking holistic methods to address their health.
